    Toward a script theory of guidance in computer-supported collaborative learning

    This article presents an outline of a script theory of guidance for computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). With its four types of components of internal and external scripts (play, scene, role, and scriptlet) and seven principles, this theory addresses the question how CSCL practices are shaped by dynamically re-configured internal collaboration scripts of the participating learners. Furthermore, it explains how internal collaboration scripts develop through participation in CSCL practices. It emphasizes the importance of active application of subject matter knowledge in CSCL practices, and it prioritizes transactive over non-transactive forms of knowledge application in order to facilitate learning. Further, the theory explains how external collaboration scripts modify CSCL practices and how they influence the development of internal collaboration scripts. The principles specify an optimal scaffolding level for external collaboration scripts and allow for the formulation of hypotheses about the fading of external collaboration scripts. Finally, the article points towards conceptual challenges and future research questions

    Collaboration in a multi-user game: impacts of an awareness tool on mutual modeling

    This paper presents an experimental research that focuses on collaboration in a multi-player game. The aim of the project is to study the cognitive impacts of awareness tools, i.e., artifacts that allow users of a collaborative system to be aware of what is going on in the joint virtual environment. The focus is on finding an effect on performance as well as on the representation an individual builds of what his partner knows, plans and intends to do (i.e., mutual modeling). We find that using awareness tools has a significant effect by improving task performance. However, the players who were provided with this tool did not show any improvement of their mutual modeling. Further analysis on contrasted groups revealed that there was an effect of the awareness tool on mutual modeling for players who spent a large amount of time using the too

    Children's peer assessment and self-disclosure in the presence of an educational robot

    Research in education has long established how children mutually influence and support each other's learning trajectories, eventually leading to the development and widespread use of learning methods based on peer activities. In order to explore children's learning behavior in the presence of a robotic facilitator during a collaborative writing activity, we investigated how they assess their peers in two specific group learning situations: peer-tutoring and peer-learning. Our scenario comprises of a pair of children performing a collaborative activity involving the act of writing a word/letter on a tactile tablet. In the peer-tutoring condition, one child acts as the teacher and the other as the learner, while in the peer-learning condition, both children are learners without the attribution of any specific role. Our experiment includes 40 children in total (between 6 and 8 years old) over the two conditions, each time in the presence of a robot facilitator. Our results suggest that the peer-tutoring situation leads to significantly more corrective feedback being provided, as well as the children more disposed to self-disclosure to the robot.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Collaborative Learning through Creative Video Composition on Distributed User Interfaces

    We report two studies that fed into user-centred design for pedagogical and technological scaffolds for social, constructive learning through creative, collaborative, reflective video composition. The studies validated this learning approach, and verified the utility and usability of an initial prototype (scaffold) built to support it. However, challenges in interaction with the target technology, multi-touch tabletops, impacted ability to carry out prescribed learning activities. Our findings point to the need to investigate an alternative approach, and informed redesign of our scaffolds. We propose coupling of distributed user interfaces, using mobile devices to access large, shared displays, to augment capability to follow our constructive learning process.We discuss also the need to manage recognised challenges to collaboration with a distributed approach

    S-COL: A Copernican turn for the development of flexibly reusable collaboration scripts

    Collaboration scripts are usually implemented as parts of a particular collaborative-learning platform. Therefore, scripts of demonstrated effectiveness are hardly used with learning platforms at other sites, and replication studies are rare. The approach of a platform-independent description language for scripts that allows for easy implementation of the same script on different platforms has not succeeded yet in making the transfer of scripts feasible. We present an alternative solution that treats the problem as a special case of providing support on top of diverse Web pages: In this case, the challenge is to trigger support based on the recognition of a Web page as belonging to a specific type of functionally equivalent pages such as the search query form or the results page of a search engine. The solution suggested has been implemented by means of a tool called S-COL (Scripting for Collaborative Online Learning) and allows for the sustainable development of scripts and scaffolds that can be used with a broad variety of content and platforms. The tool’s functions are described. In order to demonstrate the feasibility and ease of script reuse with S-COL, we describe the flexible re-implementation of a collaboration script for argumentation in S-COL and its adaptation to different learning platforms. To demonstrate that a collaboration script implemented in S-COL can actually foster learning, an empirical study about the effects of a specific script for collaborative online search on learning activities is presented. The further potentials and the limitations of the S-COL approach are discussed

    The Orchestration Matrix: A Tool to Design Heterogeneous Classroom Ecosystems

    Abstract: Modern classrooms are complex socio-technical spaces where multiple heterogeneous legacy tools and novel technologies coexist. The design and the study of such technological ecosystems (or of single technologies that have to integrate into one such ecosystem) is still under-researched, and we lack established conceptual tools to understand how a learning scenario is orchestrated across such heterogeneous sets of resources, and the role and affordances of each technology in it. In this contribution, we present the orchestration matrix, a simple table-like form that can help technology designers and researchers to analyze an existing technological classroom ecosystem from the point of view of teacher orchestration of a learning scenario, or propose new ecosystems that are (hopefully) more effective

    Specifying computer-supported collaboration scripts

    Collaboration scripts are activity programs which aim to foster collaborative learning by structuring interaction between learners. Computer-supported collaboration scripts generally suffer from the problem of being restrained to a specific learning platform and learning context. A standardization of collaboration scripts first requires a specification of collaboration scripts that integrates multiple perspectives from computer science, education and psychology. So far, only few and limited attempts at such specifications have been made. This paper aims to consolidate and expand these approaches in light of recent findings and to propose a generic framework for the specification of collaboration scripts. The framework enables a description of collaboration scripts using a small number of components (participants, activities, roles, resources and groups) and mechanisms (task distribution, group formation and sequencing)

    Structuring Collaboration Scripts: Optimizing online group work on classroom dilemmas in teacher education

    The optimal structure in collaboration scripts for serious games has appeared to be a key success factor. In this study we compare a ‘high- structured’ and ‘low-structured’ version of a mastership game where teachers-in-training discuss solutions on classroom dilemmas. We collected data on the differences in learning effects and student appreciation. The most interesting result shows that reports delivered by students that played the low-structured version received significantly higher teacher grades when compared to the high-structured version

    Informing the Design of Collaborative Activities in MOOCs using Actionable Predictions

    With the aim of supporting instructional designers in setting up collaborative learning activities in MOOCs, this paper derives prediction models for student participation in group discussions. The salient feature of these models is that they are built using only data prior to the learning activity, and can thus provide actionable predictions, as opposed to post-hoc approaches common in the MOOC literature. Some learning design scenarios that make use of this actionable information are illustrated
